Heard on the Street: Casey's buys Hayfield's two convenience stores

Convenience has a new name in Hayfield, MN as of today.

The town's two gas station/convenience stores —Four Corners and Hayfield Motor Mart — were officially acquired by the Casey's General Store chain of Ankeny, Iowa.

Justin Holtan, Steve Demmer and Neal Andersonsay it was a good time to sell their locally owned stores to Casey's.

"We have been becoming concerned, because there are very few independent c-stores left," Holtan said. "They made us a fair offer. The timing was right."

Don't expect any dramatic changes right away. Early plans are to keep both stores open, including the A&W Root Beer eatery in Four Corners, the former owners said.

Representatives of Casey's were unavailable for comment on this deal.

"It is a good opportunity for our employees with more opportunity for advancement and better benefits. And with Casey's buying power, it will be better for the community," Holtan said.

There are no plans for any major changes to staffing at this point. The store stores employ about 30 people total.

Demmer and Anderson built Four Corners at the Minnesota highways 30 and 56 in 2000. They purchased the Motor Mart in 2007 and brought Holtan in as a partner.

Now the two Hayfield stores join the more 1,600 Casey's in the Midwest. Casey's targets communities with populations of 5,000 or less for their stores.
