About foursquare. We had a speaker at CRU last February, Steven Berlin of outside.in who talked about location-type services that give people walking off the street offers. A sort of live, local reach. I imagine foursquare may fall into the same discussion, even though it's more about creating reasons outside impluse or gasoline for people to go to the store. Just thoughts ...

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Pinnacle Corp. has announced the launch of a new feature for their suite of loyalty products, a Pinnacle Loyalty iPhone App that allows consumers to use their iPhone as their loyalty card.

We've seen a couple c-stores launch apps--notably Rutter's. It'll be interesting to see if turnkey products like Pinnacle's mentioned above will get more retailers into this game.

Does everyone in this "group" use a mobile with app functionality? Just how universal is this at this point?

This organization provided technology solutions to 7-Eleven, and could not even implement a technology solution themself. My background was working with Mitsui & Co. which handles all the logistics and systems for 7-Eleven Japan. I was responsible for helping develop the solutions on the USA side.

Last week, I interviewed VISA execs as part of my Data Security story (May cover feature). Here are some comments:

Q: Many retailers are talking about not taking PIN debit at the pump as a solution to compliance on July 1. Is that okay?

VISA Spokesperson: VISA wouldn’t have a requirement for anyone to accept any payment type.
VISA Exec: If [retailers are] not accepting PIN debit, then they wouldn’t be concerned about T-DES. But they’ll have to weight that with the impact to consumers.

Q: We hear the signer of the merchant agreement will be the one held responsible for a breach, is that right?

VISA Exec: We enforce compliance with the acquirer. In terms of further liability from acquirer to merchant or [jobber] down to dealer, it’s determined by those parties. We focus on our acquirer relationship. We apply fines to the acquirer and it falls back on the agreement signed by merchant and acquirer.
